Not relieved by other methods

Before joint replacement surgery is considered, simpler and safer methods should usually be tried first when they are appropriate.

Activity modification

For example, if pain is triggered only by running but otherwise is not bothersome, then it may be better to stop running or change to lower-impact exercise. In that situation, total joint replacement would usually not be indicated.

Weight management

Achievement of ideal body weight is also extremely important. Obesity is associated with premature wear of a previously normal joint and is a significant risk factor for premature osteoarthritis. It can also contribute to premature wear of an artificial joint, make the operation more difficult, and increase the risk of post-operative complications.

Many patients who successfully lose weight have significant improvement in pain and may be able to delay the need for surgery.

Other treatment options

Other forms of treatment include medications, injections, braces, and physical therapy. If they have been tried and do not work, then the next step may need to be a total joint replacement.
