Normal knee anatomy

The knee joint has 3 distinct compartments: between the knee cap and the thighbone, called the patello-femoral joint; between the inside half of the femur and tibia called the medial compartment; and between the outside half of the femur and tibia, called the lateral compartment.

Present in the knee are also ligaments and special cartilage cushions (called menisci) needed for proper functioning of the knee.
